After decades of research and development of magnesium as degradable implant material a mileston was reached in 2013 according to the CE marking of an orthopedic magnesium implants. In the following years more and more suppliers also for other applications found the way to approval. The special properties of magnesium were acknowlegded in 2020 by the FDA with the recognition of different magnesium-based implants as „breaktrough devices“. The talk should give an overview about the clinical status and possible areas of application of various magnesium implants.
